Citroën’s new Berlingo Multispace has been designed with the family motorist firmly in mind, yet it also ensures you enjoy every mile spent at the wheel. There’s a spacious cabin equipped with a variety of helpful features, plus clean and efficient engines to maintain low running costs.
This unconventional MPV has a unique personality that adds to the vehicle’s overall appeal. LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, chrome detailing and alloy wheels feature with selected models, and they’re joined by more practical roof bars and side protection mouldings. A large sliding rear door on each flank makes it easy to access the second and third row (where fitted), and Citroën offers eight vibrant paint shades to finish the look.
These complement the interior superbly, which can include contrast coloured or patterned upholstery from front to back. As the Multispace’s name suggests, there’s plenty of room inside and the standard five-seat configuration can grow to seven seats when the optional Family Pack is chosen.
With all five seats upright there’s still room for 675 litres of cargo in the boot, increasing to an excellent 3,000 litres when they’re folded away. For even more storage options and a glass roof, opt for the VTR or XTR model and choose the optional MODUTOP, a clever feature that enhances the cabin practicality even further.
This MPV offers not only masses of space, but a variety of infotainment kit too. The radio/CD player can be controlled through buttons mounted on the steering wheel, and all but the entry-level model also include an AUX-in socket for connecting external devices. A quick glance at the trip computer informs you of journey details, with air conditioning enabling you to set the preferred temperature being an option with VT and VTR models.
As regards drive, there are one petrol and four diesel engines which produce varying levels of power to suit your preferred performance output. The sole petrol produces 96bhp and couples with a five-speed manual gearbox to deliver power smoothly. Among the diesels you can choose a 91bhp e-HDi, the cleanest of all units with CO2 emissions of 115g/km. It also returns the best fuel economy at a pleasing 64.2mpg combined.
Safety is another area of strength for the Berlingo Multispace, as Citroën has fitted various active and passive systems at no extra cost. ISOFIX child seat anchors hold infant passengers securely, and airbags throughout the cabin protect should a collision occur. Preventing them in the first place is Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control and Hill Start Assist (HSA), plus Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
