Working for the same company for 10 years is considered admirable, 20 years and you are seriously dedicated but 40 years is not that common in the world of business and certainly not the norm in the automotive industry.
Jan Mullen is the 40 year man.
He was 16 when he joined what was then Ellisons Car Sales in March 1977 owned by the late David Brown. It was David’s single-mindedness and ambition that brought Malaysian-built Proton to the UK in 1987 and together with acquiring several other franchises, he was building quite a reputation until his untimely death in 1994.
Jan (he is of Belgium/Irish descent) started as an apprentice paint sprayer/panel beater working on cars such as Ford Escort, Capri, Cortina and Mini. His own first car was a Vauxhall Viva. He came off the shop floor and into the office when he was 32 and built a great team, many of who are still with him. Under his management, the bodyshop has earned an enviable reputation and by investing in tools, equipment and staff, it will continue for many years to come.
Just think how much he has saved on
travel costs over the years as he lives across the road!
